Robot Builds Intricate Tools From Sticky Plastic

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich's Bio-Inspired Robotics Lab are creating robots that can construct complex tools using hot-melt adhesive, which can be switched repeatedly between liquid and solid states through temperature adjustment. When cooled, the adhesive solidifies and forms strong bonds. The raw material can be used to give form to new tools by itself or used to bind larger elements together, including new sensors or motors. The fabrication of movable grippers as well as scoops has been demonstrated by the researchers.
