Rewiring with Conductive Adhesives Key to Boosting Solar Cell Joints Efficiency

Looking for new ways to up the efficiency of solar cells, the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) has reported that connecting two solar cells into one bigger cell using a specific connection could increase the combined cell’s efficiency by nearly 4%. The nature of the connection, according to the NREL, involves the use of a transparent conductive adhesive of silver-coated microspheres embedded in epoxy.

Reported results on the effects of using this connection to enable three different tandem cell combinations showed that overall there was an increased amount of sunlight on the surfaces of the cells and an almost “negligible” series resistance, both of which contribute to the achievement of the 4% efficiency increase.
