New System for Monitoring Glue Application With Flexo Folder Gluers

As standards for corrugated box packaging continue to rise, the ability to check whether adhesive beads have been properly placed becomes increasingly important. In the past, manufacturers using flexo folder gluers had to make do with capacitive sensors, but these tended to be unreliable, and the feature was often deliberately disabled as a result.

Now, Baumer hss has introduced MLT-STA, a quality monitoring system that can be retrofitted onto existing flexo folder gluers. The company says that its solution is an economical one that will work well with any adhesive extrusion system and that it fills the quality control gap that plagued manufacturers in the past. The MLT-40 multi-bead cold glue sensor can examine up to three adhesive beads on either one or two sides of corrugated board simultaneously.

It takes less than a second for the MLT-STA to determine whether the adhesive beads are in the correct places, that they have not extended, and that they are the correct distance from the edge of the glue flaps. If it detects an anomaly, visual and audio alarm signals alert operators. At the same time, it marks faulty boxes with a liquid that’s visible under UV light so that they can easily be identified and removed from the production system. The equipment also generates reports that allow managers to evaluate the productivity of their flexo folder gluers.
