Momentive Specialty Chemicals Inc., which supplies epoxy resins and curing agents for the automotive industry, introduced a new epoxy system for mass producing lightweight carbon-fiber structural components. Momentive introduced this system at the JEC Europe 2012 Composites Show, March 27-29, in Paris. The new system is a combination of Momentive's EPIKOTE Resin 05475 and EPIKURE Curing Agent 05443. The combination allows for direct infusion of carbon fiber material using industrial scale Resin Transfer Molding process equipment. Curing takes place in under five minutes. "Carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy composites can deliver weight savings of up to 60 percent compared to conventional steel designs," said Nipesh Shah, Vice President, Global Marketing and Business Development of Momentive's Epoxy, Phenolic, and Coatings Division. The EPIKOTE Resin 05475/EPIKURE Curing Agent 05443 system features low viscosity, a longer injection window, and excellent wetting and adhesion to carbon fibers.
