Research carried out by AkzoNobel in collaboration with the Dutch Advanced Research Center Chemical Building Blocks Consortium (ARC CBBC) at the University of Groningen have reported the development of technology capable of producing more sustainable resins and coatings in the future.

According to AkzoNobel the resins which are based on bio-mass based monomers, renewable raw materials, oxygen, and UV light, could change the future of coatings by adding to their functionality. These changes could include intelligent paint capable of controlling the release of its active ingredients; and the production of coatings which could have new functionalities added at different in their lifespan.

This new technology uses monomers based on sugar derivatives isolated from bio-mass, and patents on it have been filed in preparation for products which are expected to be introduced within the next five years.
