Mixing It Up: Bayer MaterialScience Polyurethanes Help Toughen Up Epoxy Adhesives

At Bayer MaterialScience LLC, Dr. Jay A. Johnston has been focused on strengthening epoxy adhesives. Traditional epoxies are brittle adhesives. Conversely, polyurethanes are very tough materials. When the two are combined correctly, the result can be a tough, durable epoxy hybrid. Dr. Johnson specifically looked at the addition of blocked polyurethane prepolymers to the epoxy backbone. This produces the desired toughness and at the same time increases other advantageous properties including adhesion on varied substrates, green strength, temperature resistance, and cure rates. Dr. Johnston recently presented a comparison of epoxy adhesive with and without polyurethane prepolymers at the Adhesive & Sealant Convention 2012 Fall Conference and Expo.
