A French medical adhesive company received this year’s prestigious “RadTech’s Emerging Technology Award.” RadTech is an association for ultra-violet (UV) and electron beam (EB) technology. The winner, Gecko Biomedical, received the emerging technology award for UV-curing, biodegradable, medical adhesives. These adhesives are non-toxic and safe for use on or in the body for surgical closures or wound repair. UV-curing biomedical adhesives have the advantage of unrestricted time to ensure the adhesive is correctly placed or to make readjustments to placement.  Then, with the application of UV light, the adhesive polymerizes to form a tough, but flexible waterproof seal.  On-demand polymerization is a major advantage in surgeries where precision and timing may be vitally important. In addition, the use of biocompatible, biodegradable compounds means that, like dissolving sutures, these adhesives can be made to degrade and leave no trace once their job is done.
