Carbon Fibre Composites -Combining Mechanical Fastening With Adhesives

While in some instances it’s possible to choose either mechanical fastening or adhesives as the exclusive answer to bonding carbon-fiber composites with other materials like steel and aluminium, there are instances where the best outcome is achieved by using both types of fastening to handle different assembly areas, according to scientists.

The EWI engineering and technology organization reports that in some applications both adhesives and mechanical fastenings, both of which are well-established joining methods for structural and load-bearing applications, are applied to prevent delamination and fracturing which can be detrimental to the structural integrity of the material.

According to the Fraunhofer Research Institute for Casting, Composite and Processing Technology, just as component materials are chosen for their function, joining methods should be chosen according the materials chosen. CFRP is suitable for components connecting long expanses, while metal is usually selected for functional components and attachment points like steering mechanisms.
