Dow’s new barrier adhesive will help the food industry to package its goods more sustainably with polyolefin packaging that will enhance shelf-life while also offering greater recyclability. Its ADCOTETM L86-500 barrier adhesive is designed for medium barrier applications and can be recycled through standard processes.

In addition, the company says that the packaging is resource efficient, allowing for downgauging and layer simplification. Energy savings will also be achieved because the packaging will require less heat exposure in order to complete the sealing process. Shelf-life will equal that of foods packaged in PET-based packaging materials. Finally, metallized packaging made with existing barrier films will benefit from the new adhesive system’s flex-crack resistance. Dow says that its innovation will be cost competitive and that it meets food and beverage industry goals for improved sustainability.

The packaging may also benefit the personal care industry. Dow says that it would be suitable for packaging wet wipes and has created a prototype package to demonstrate this.
