When insects or geckos cross a surface, they leave no traces behind. Now Akron Ascent Innovations (AAI) has developed a dry adhesive that the company reports can stick to almost anything without leaving a residue. The new adhesives have strong shear adhesion but a low peel strength and very minimal tackiness. Peel them away from surfaces, and there’s no stickiness left behind according to the company.

AAI’s president, a senior research fellow at Akron University, says that the newly announced partnership with Velcro will help AAI to market its product much more effectively. Velcro sees a market opportunity for the adhesive in interior decoration. Pictures and hangings can be attached to walls using Velcro, and a dry adhesive backing will, in turn, attach the Velcro to the surface of walls or windows.

The versatility of the adhesive is demonstrated by its ability to bond with a wide variety of substrates including plastic, glass, steel, and drywall.  Further uses in the packaging, personal care, automotive, medical and construction industries are being explored. It’s first use, however, seems likely to stem from Velcro’s concept, and the resulting product is expected to be available by the end of 2017.
