Aircraft Sandwich Composite Reinforcing and Repairs

Reinforcing honeycomb composites with traditional syntactic techniques face challenges from long manufacturing times, technical performance issues, and the overall quality of the finished component. Huntsman provides solutions for edge sealing, forming and bonding insert potting applications, and honeycomb reinforcement and repairs with its Epocast epoxy syntactics and Eposert syntactic based materials. Huntsman manufactures epoxy syntactics specifically for edge sealing, used to fabricate and refurbish aircraft cabin components. Edge sealing products include: Araldite 1644-A/B ultra-low density syntactic, Epocast1617-A/B and 1618-B/D low-density syntactics, and Epocast 89537-A/B and 1652-A/B medium density syntactics. Current interior aircraft components designs frequently stipulate the use of metallic or thermoplastic inserts, and with thermoplastic inserts, standard epoxy syntactics cannot be used. Huntsman developed Uralane 5774-A/C, a two-component polyurethane adhesive, to address this issue. Huntsman’s insert potting materials, including products within the Epocast range and Uralane 5774-A/C polyurethane adhesive, can reinforce honeycomb composite panels before fasteners are inserted. These high-strength epoxy syntactic and adhesive systems provide enhanced technical performance and easy-to-handle viscosities. With sandwich components, Epocast products can be applied directly into the honeycomb or pre-cured and molded. Eposert insert technology can reduce repair time for a damaged honeycomb by as much as 95 percent compared to traditional syntactic repair techniques.
