Adhesives Play a Big Role in EV Design

With EV design largely determined by how the weight of the vehicle impacts on the all-important range length covered by the vehicles’ batteries between charges, adhesives are playing a large role in the way designers plan new models because of the lightness of their bond when compared with heavy metal fasteners. But although this is near the top of the list, of adhesives’ benefits to the EV market, it is not the only reason for their impact on EV design. They also contribute in other ways to both structural bonding and in the assembly of battery modules.

Adhesives have proved very versatile in the number and range of substrates they can adhere to, and certainly outdo the bolts and nuts in strength and flexibility when it comes to bonding materials which are dissimilar. They have also been shown to allow for more accurate gap control when bonding batteries’ cells and module side panels.

A large number of adhesive manufacturers, including giants like 3M, Henkel, Lord, and many others have responded with the same flexibility and versatility as the adhesives they are creating to the EV assembly demands for innovation. This has led to their taking varied approaches to designing adhesives specially aimed at factors such as different levels of strength, thermal control and cooling applications for batteries which are unique to EV design and assembly.
