Adhesives in Packaging Webinar

Posted on 7/8/2013 8:04:35 AM By Jeff Timm

On July 10, 2013, the Adhesive & Sealant Council (ASC) will be sponsoring a very informative webinar on Adhesives in Packaging 101.  Since you are reading this blog I am guessing you have an interest in topics of interest to packaging professionals.

It would be poor use of a pun to say “packaging adhesives hold the whole industry together,” but in reality there is a lot of truth to that statement.  The volume of packaging adhesives make up over half of all adhesives sold in North America and just under half of all adhesives sold worldwide (source: DPNA International).  Packaging adhesives are used, for example, in case and carton closure, label to substrate adhesion, tie-layers for multi layer coextrusion films, wet and dry lamination adhesives for film, foil and paper-board, the binding for paper tube/core windings, the binding agent for holding the multi-layer corrugated board and the seal-layer and re-openable technology for film packaging closures.   A variety of adhesive chemistries are used in packaging adhesives including hot melts-ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), polymer dispersions and emulsions-vinyl acetate (PVAC), EVA, polyurethane (PUR and PUD), pressure sensitive (PSA)-acrylic, SBS, SBR and a vast array of other hot melt, water based and solvent technologies.

Key Topics/Objectives:

The ASC Adhesives in Packaging 101 Webinar is designed to develop an understanding of various types of adhesives and application methods specific to the packaging industry.  In fact webinar instructor, Dave Horwat, says a key take-a-way of the webinar will be “a closer understanding of the relationship between adhesive performance and application equipment capability.  Marrying the equipment to the machinability of the adhesive is critical to achieving the delicate balance between adhesive end-use design and performance requirements and the ability to apply the adhesive in a safe economical way.”

Additionally, a review of the fundamentals of adhesive bonding and the principles associated with creating reliable bonds as the foundation to understanding their use for packaging will also be included.

Identification of quality characteristics and performance criteria for adhesives and choice of the right adhesive for the application is an integral component of any discussion of adhesive performance and will be covered.  Packaging designers and those responsible for R & D and manufacturing will learn to identify the quality characteristics of adhesives and the sources of quality variation.  In a related area how to incorporate knowledge of the limitations of adhesives’ performance and potential sources of failure will be addressed.

Finally, trends, new developments and the new opportunities for the industry will be covered.  This is a worthy webinar if you want to learn the fundamentals or keep abreast of what is happening in packaging adhesives.  Won’t you please attend?
