Specialty chemicals company, Covestro AG, has invested $4.6 million in upgrading its research facility at the Japanese Innovation Center in Amagasaki by installing high tech machinery aimed at development and innovation in the construction and automotive industries, and in the adhesives, coatings, and paints used by those sectors.

As part of the upgrade, Covestro is to add new impetus to the research it has been conducting at the center for the past 50 years into innovations in polyurethanes (PU); polycarbonates; and coatings, adhesives, and specialties (CAS), by installing a 450-metric ton two-component injection molding machine with DirectCoatingDirectSkinning (DCDS) technology.

A new 600-tonne robot-assisted PU press machine for the creation of larger auto interior prototypes, will also include a painting booth equipped with temperature and humidity control for testing water-borne coatings, and a new PU spray foam room will be used to evaluate the seasonal performance of the foam.
