JUST RELEASED! ASTM D7447-08 Standardized Adhesive CAD Symbol (free plug-in)
The Adhesive and Sealant Council, Inc. (ASC), in collaboration with ASTM, has released a new ASTM International standard, D7447-08, Standard Practice for Symbolizing Adhesive Applications. This standard, and the accompanying electronic symbol, enable engineers, architects, designers and other end-users to more conveniently represent adhesives on computer-aided design (CAD) drawings.
Individuals can download a free, executable plug-in of the symbol and use it in several versions of AutoCAD®, as well as TurboCAD®. Users can complete fields with information such as adhesive chemistry type and physical form, surface preparation, curing information and more.
Background
ASC initiated the adhesive CAD symbol project in response to focus group feedback received from the engineering, architecture and design communities. ASC wanted to understand these groups’ perceptions of adhesives and learned that ‘end-users’ desired a way to graphically represent an adhesive in a CAD drawing. From those focus group sessions, ASC approached ASTM International with the idea of creating a new global standard and symbol. The new standard resulted from ASC’s efforts with ASTM's D14 Adhesives Committee, specifically the D14.60 subcommittee, which manages the Adhesive Material Classification System.
Description *
The new symbol provides an efficient means of placing complete information about adhesives on engineering drawings (see illustration). The joint is the basis of reference for the symbol to which the arrow line is pointed. The reference line of the symbol is used to designate the type of adhesive to be used, including information about its physical form, chemical technology family, requirements for surface preparation, application method (bead versus roll coat), and cure method. An optional tail provides a place to include additional information about the adhesive that is not referenced in other notations.
Designers, engineers, architects and other individuals preparing CAD drawings benefit from the use of ASTM D7447-08 Standard Practice for Symbolizing Adhesive Applications in two important ways. Using the electronic CAD symbol saves users’ time, while allowing more specific adhesives information to be included on the actual CAD drawings.

* NOTE: ASC's Adhesive CAD Symbol is best launched using AutoCAD software versions 2007-2009, with the Adhesive Symbol Plug-in installed, or TurboCAD Professional Version 16. While the symbol can be used in other CAD or graphics systems, the DWG drawing will lose the proprietary parametric intelligence built into the Symbol. The built-in intelligence is the ability to view, select and re-select the expanded detail of elements of the Adhesive Symbol (Ref: Figure 3 of ASTM D 7447-08), from drop-down lists provided in the Properties palette of AutoCAD. The built-in intelligence is only available to AutoCAD owners who have installed the Adhesive Symbol Plug-in into AutoCAD software versions 2007-2009. On other CAD platforms or on versions of AutoCAD pre-version 2007, only the symbol geometry and fixed text will be imported (Ref: Figure 5 of ASTM D 7447-08). Changing the original value of a parameter (i.e., fields and subfields) such as surface preparation and application method would require manual data entry through other CAD program's drawing and editing tools.
